Let’s have some more HPX hip hop-related goodness shall we? Might as well do my level best to poke holes in my own assertion that there is less hip hop at this HPX than in the past (did the GZA checking his texts during his Liquid Swords performance a couple years ago sour the HPX on the big name hip hop shows?).
As I said the other day, there are still plenty of great hip hop acts appearing at HPX this year, one prime example of this being brunch & latte enthusiast More Or Les. If you’ve checked out Les’ last album, Brunch With A Vengeance, you know he reps for niceguys and true school hip hop with equal vigour, and I’m sure his set as the opener at Reflections on Saturday, Oct. 22nd will be a great start to a pretty interesting evening.
Who’s up after Les you ask? Well it’s only the finest rap group ever to come straight outta Truro, NS: Hip Club Groove. HCG were part of the group of Halifax hip hop pioneers (including Buck “Stinkin’ Rich” 65) of the early 90’s that started making records and getting attention for the scene outside the city. They released their debut record on Sloan’s Murderecords in 1994, and now they are back some 15+ years later to resume the hip hop hijinks they started so long ago. I’m assuming they’ll have plenty of friends & fans in the building for their set, so it should be a fun one.
Also fun should be the headlining set from Trouble Andrew, aka Nova Scotian ex-pat and former Olympic Snowboarder Trevor Andrew. Trevor has morphed himself into the frontman of a band that apparently plays “crunk-rock” (the internet has made me aware of the fact that Trouble Andrew has a song which features Lil’ Jon, so Yeeeeeaaaa-Yuh), which sounds fun, and like HCG, one would assume that TA will also have plenty of friends in the house to see his homecoming.
